Beginning A Career With Fashion School

For fashion enthusiasts a career working in this exciting environment can seem like the best of all worlds earning a living while having the opportunity to be creative in an industry for which you have a passion. A career in fashion can be a glamorous and stimulating occupation; but in order to be successful you must have the ability and the education behind you. Fashion school can bring you one step closer to a career in the fashion industry.

Those interested in a career in fashion must initially possess an innate ability to create beautiful clothing designs and effectively communicate and manufacturer those designs. A career such as this requires more than just a love of clothing although that is obviously an important element to the job. If these are abilities that you possess, fashion school is the next natural step in finding your place in the fashion world.

Fashion school will give you the fundamentals necessary to begin your exploration of the fashion industry. Classroom education will provide you with the basics of design including the ability to transfer what is in your head to paper or computer. Further, a fashion school will provide an education on the choosing and handling of textiles of all varieties and the sewing both by hand and machine and manufacturing of your design.

Fashion school lays the groundwork for a career in the fashion industry and opens doors that would normally not be available to someone starting out in the business. For instance, a reputable fashion school can assist you in getting an internship or apprenticeship with a working design house. This can be the most important step that you take in your career allowing you to get hands-on experience and network with important people in the industry; also important is the opportunity this allows you to build your own portfolio and establish a name for yourself in the industry. An initial work experience such as an apprenticeship through your fashion school could very well be the start of your own career.

Beginning a career in the fashion industry can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Fashion school along with the hands-on work experiences they offer can allow you to hone your abilities and carve out your place in this spectacular industry.

It's a true saying: "It's not your father's university any more!" Things have changed - a lot - in the educational world. In the past you went from high school to college and then into your first full-time career position, before starting a family.

All that has changed, of course. Today people may delay their entry into college for any number of reasons: pursuing military service, single parenting, perhaps just an unwillingness to pursue further schooling at that time. Many people just start their careers (or attempt to start them) by entering the job market straight out of high school.

Then something happens - the light finally goes on, and they say, "I need more educational training!" But, at that time of life, responsibilities and commitments may make it difficult, if not impossible, to devote 3 to 4 (or more) years to higher educational pursuits. Did you know that the average age of the university graduate is steadily climbing? That means that, more than ever, people are returning to school later in life.

That's where the University of Phoenix comes in. Some years ago, they realized that traditional educational environments were changing - and they changed with it. They are known today as innovators in higher education - they have redesigned the traditional college curriculum so that people with adult lives and commitments CAN attend classes - online. The folks at the University of Phoenix realized that many adults just don't have the time to go to daily classes, so they have leveraged the power of the computer to bring those classes to you!

The degree programs and course offerings from the University of Phoenix are many and varied. You can pursue courses in Marketing, Management, Criminal Justice, IT, Business, Nursing, Education, Health Care and others. And they are developing new programs of study all the time. And rest assured: all of their instructors hold Masters or Doctorate degrees.

And the payoff? By taking classes through the University of Phoenix, you can complete most degree programs in 2-3 years! Imagine - an accredited degree in less time than traditional schools, even while maintaining full-time jobs and family responsibilities! Both non-degree, Bachelors and Masters programs are available. And with your weekday schedule in mind, they offer classes on nights and weekends, and major assignments can be completed during the weekends.

One of the very best things about working with the University of Phoenix is that when you contact them with more information, they will assign a real, live human being as your contact resource person. This person will answer any questions that you might have about the program, will help you to arrange payments for courses, and work with you to enroll in your first courses. They serve as a kind of "academic advisor" to help you get your educational pursuits into high gear.

One thing remains. You have the information - what will you do about it? Are you just going to 'think about it' - or do it? You have the interest. Do you have the drive? The thirst to know more, to succeed, to better yourself? If you do, the University of Phoenix is ready to help you attain those educational goals!

Computer Career

Computers have officially become a necessity in this 21st century, and with this technology boom comes the growing availability of a computer career. If you are looking for a computer career, your range of options is immense. While a few years ago a computer career was restricted primarily to programming, the range of options has grown as computers are now used in almost every industry today.

Most commonly associated with a computer career is the computer programmer job. However, today, if you are looking for a computer career as a computer programmer, you also have options within the career itself. You can be an applications programmer, writing software to handle specific tasks, or a systems programmer, who controls how the software is used. Some employers want a programmer with a B.S. in Computer Science, but you can get started in a computer career as a programmer with a two-year degree or certificate.

If you are a more creative individual looking for a computer career, you may want to consider becoming a web designer. Many companies are looking to offer qualified and creative individuals a computer career as a website designer. Website designers can work as freelancers, designing and maintaining websites for a variety of clients. Other website designers work to design, maintain, and update the website for one company. Another computer career for the art-focused individual is graphic design. Much of today s graphic design is done via computers, so it can be a lucrative computer career. Also, the web has opened up computer careers in website administration and e-commerce.

Many people believe that a computer career involves programming and designing software or websites, but a computer career can also involve using the computers for a purpose. For some people looking for a computer career means that they can work in the areas of data entry or technical writing. Many people find that they want a career working on a computer entering data or crafting words, but they may never need to get into the technical aspect of how the computer works. Training to find a computer career in data entry or writing ranges from four-year degrees to on-the-job training.

If you are interested in a computer career, and you want to get into a fast-growing computer career, you may want to consider getting into computer security. The range of career options when you work with computer security is vast. The government is concerned with keeping network information protected, and they often hire people who are interested in a computer career focusing on security. Many companies are also becoming aware that they need to protect private information, and training in computer security is key to finding a job in this computer career.

Fifteen Minutes To A Higher Grade Point Average

Adult students return to college with well defined goals, significant life experience, and maturity. In those areas they are generally ahead of their younger counterparts.

However, many adult students must overcome some challenges their younger counterparts never face.

Ask any adult student and he or she will tell you that it can be difficult to balance the demands of family, career, and education. Even online degree programs, which enable students to work anywhere they wish and set their own work schedules, require timely completion of assignments. And, students who find themselves continually behind are seldom successful.

Good time management skills and strong self-discipline, important to all students, are even more necessary to adults facing family, career, and academic demands.

And, even students with great time management skills often overlook one important technique. A technique which requires little effort but can pay big dividends.

You can't add hours to your day. And you can't add days to your week. But, you can find fifteen minute blocks of time to utilize for your schoolwork. And, just two such blocks of time each day will give you an extra three and a half hours of study time a week.

If you think about it, you'll realize just how much you can get done in fifteen minutes. You can revise your notes, review a difficult concept, reread a complex passage, email a classmate or professor, choose a topic for a paper, etc.

Fifteen minutes can be a significant amount of time; enough time to get something accomplished. And, for most people, it is not too difficult to find at least two fifteen minute blocks of time daily. How about getting up just fifteen minutes earlier every day and spending that time doing schoolwork? What about spending fifteen minutes at your office before going home at the end of your workday? Perhaps you could read while eating breakfast or lunch.

I know a college student who spends between fifteen minutes and a half hour on her schoolwork whenever she returns to her apartment. By the way, she has been on the Dean's List during all of her five college semesters.

Everyone can find two additional fifteen minute periods a day to spend on their studies. And, taking advantage of those small blocks of time really can turn a competent student into a high-achiever.

Career Aptitude Tests - Using One To Make A Career Comeback

Are you a woman who has been out of the workforce for sometime and needs to re-enter the career world? Perhaps you have taken time off due to child-raising or caring for a sick or elderly family member.

Maybe you are feeling some anxiety because you know your skill set is out-of-date or even nonexistent.

If this describes your situation, the first thing you'll want to do is take one or more career aptitude tests. The information you can get from these tests will enable you to build a road map to your future career.

Career testing works best when your expectations are crystal clear. Here are three things you should gain from taking career aptitude tests.

1. Uncover your strengths.
This step is crucial as it lays the groundwork for vital future steps. You may have developed significant life skills through

-- parenting,

-- volunteering,

-- personal growth (think hobbies and household management), or

-- part time jobs.

Within any of these areas, you have learned specific skills. You may not have a college degree in these areas, but they all contribute to your skill base and just as importantly, they demonstrate your learning capacity. Once you know what your strengths are and how you learn, you can conquer or maneuver around nearly any obstacle put in front of you. Think of this as a game and you'll find it more enjoyable and less stressful.

2. Expose weak areas.
This is very important, so don't skim over this part. A personal assessment that doesn't let you look your limitations in the eye is not very useful. This information, combined with your strengths' assessment, will guide you as you decide what education or training, if any, you will need to re-enter the workforce.

Your weak areas will probably never be your strengths, but they don't need to hold you back, either. For example, exploring a weakness in math may show you that one basic math course is all you need to open several career doors on your strengths' list. Why give up a lifetime of happiness and achievement for lack of a four month, twice a week college course? Get real with yourself. You'll be glad you did.

3. Confidence to take the next step.
As already mentioned a solid career aptitude test will accurately assess your current skills and show you what potential areas are waiting for you to explore. A large portion of the stress involved with re-entering the workforce comes directly from not having a track record of self-confidence. Let's face it, a paycheck every two weeks is solid evidence someone thinks you and your skills count for something. If you have been a stay-at-home mom, for example, you have been enjoying different types of rewards, many more wonderful than money. However, in the career world, money counts, and confident people find the adjustment is easier and more pleasant.

Use career testing to accurately consider what your current skills are AND what your potential skills are. Then you can move forward in confidence through job-training or educational choices knowing that you are on the right track for you.

Wherever you are at today is the sum of your past adventures. Use career aptitude tests and other related tools to pull all the parts together for you, to see where you've been and where you might go.

Modern Online Career Portals The One-stop Shop

In the not-so-recent-past, job seekers had to spend hours upon hours walking around visiting companies and career consultants hoping to get a good job. They had to pour over newspapers and job listings for hours and then call up every prospective employer to ask for an appointment. But the advent of the Internet has changed all that. Now one of the most effective and efficient ways to look for a job is by using online career services. Unlike days past, the new online job services offer comprehensive advice concerning interviews, resume writing, and even career coaching all at reasonable prices, and some services are free of charge.

Online Career Sites- Job Searching Made Simple

Online career sites started out small but with time they have become bigger and better, and offer more value-added services. With online career services, you have a rich repository of career-related information at your fingertips 24/7. Using an online job service is very efficient. Instead of having to go to several different sources for career-related information and help, you can find everything you need in one place.

Is The Online Career Site Reputable?

We've all heard of job-related scams, so it pays to be careful. Scammers create false vacancies and post them with the intention of getting personal information about candidates and later misusing it. If you follow certain practices while using an online career service, you will be secure. To verify that an online career service will do what they say they will, ask yourself the following questions:

Is there a help function contact email or otherwise?

Does the service offer career coaching (it is hard to fake this)?
Is there sufficient information on the site (a dearth of information suggests a scam)?

You can also verify the reliability of an online career service from sources like the Better Business Bureau.

A reputable online career service offers lots of features and information upfront. A good site will include lots of free articles, resume writing help and career coaching available. In addition, they will offer free tools and assessments for job seekers to use on their own before seeking live help.

Gone are the days when a career site only allowed job seekers to post their resumes and search available vacancies. Today's career sites are comprehensive tools, offering complete career management, planning and consulting.

The Rules of Engagement

The Art of War:In the Battlefield of Business you must be equipped with: The Top Rules of Engagement For Business Success!

How do Men and Women work together to create the best work environment for all? They work with the Rules of Engagement.

Rule #1 CONFIDENCE: The level of self-confidence maintained by both parties will help determine how well the interactions will play out. One can interact with peers, supervisors or staff with confidence, utilizing leadership skills to improve the results of any transaction, negotiation or team work effort. There isn't a situation that can be described that wouldn't benefit from both parties leaving the "baggage" behind and working from a position of self confidence. Interaction between men and men, men and women and women and women are being tested constantly and will improve when both parties come from a position of confidence, leadership, and strategic partnership. A lack of self-confidence creates duplicity, back stabbing and a defensive nature.

It's not always recognized but its there lurking in the background of every interaction.

THE MESSAGE FOR MEN and WOMEN:

You either have confidence or you don't You either have the skills to do the job or you don't Approaching each interaction anticipating that you are required to "Prove Yourself" or the other party needs to do the same will cloud your ability to do the job you were hired to do! GET OVER IT! Act in a professional manner, assertive with CONFIDENCE Make the most of every interaction Put your efforts on the same path going in the same direction.

The results are amazing because Confident business partners create AMAZING RESULTS!

Rule #2 PHYSICAL : Dos and Don'ts Have you ever worked with someone who, when speaking to you, stands just a little too close? Have you every worked with someone who wears too much perfume or cologne? Have you ever worked with someone who could use a breath mint all the time? What about the women who love to hug everyone, or the man who likes to put his arm around both his male and female's staff's shoulder as a sign of appreciation or camaraderie?

These are all signs of the physical don'ts everyone needs their space. Business relationships are much more successful when all parties are not feeling they are in compromising physical positions. Nothing inappropriate implied here just uncomfortable

1. Keep your space when making your point, be sure you make eye contact from a proper distance to allow the other party to digest your words and body expressions without feeling "backed into a corner" or "crowded" as you try to convince the other party your position is the one and only choice!

2. When meeting your professional counterpart, extend a hand, not a hug.

3. Men, women and men alike don't always like the pat on the back or squeeze of the arm, embrace of the shoulder.

4. Great rule of thumb: If you wouldn't do that physical move with a business associate of the same sex, don't make the physical move with the opposite sex. Women, just because you might hug and kiss an old friend of the female persuasion, don't hug and kiss a female business associate and for sure don't hug and kiss a male business associate. It's hard to be taken seriously if you are hugging and kissing the team! Men, same approach applies: if you wouldn't hug and kiss a male business associate there is no reason to hug and kiss a female business associate. You want her to respect you the same way her male counterpart would.

Rule #3 SCARCITY MENTALITY: Replace Competition with Creativity:

This concept brings forward the idea that business success is abundant. If you utilize your creativity instead of worrying about the other person getting ahead of you, the picture will now include a whole new set of possibilities.

Win/Win: with creative ideas. Create a mentor/student bond or work side by side rather than in confrontation mode. All of these imply that you are not running from "the Pie is only so big!"

One-up-man-ship: This completely distracts all parties from the ultimate goal; focus on the players and you get just that, glaring issues with each side of the puzzle, friction, certainly duplicity in the message. If you focus on the goal, rather than the players and CREATE new ideas and approaches, while really listening to each other the GOAL will become more important than the players and the RESULTS can be amazing.

When you eliminate Scarcity Mentality you create:

Results = you have self-worth.

Results = you have creative license to really grow your talents.

Results = you remove the tension and friction = Quantum Leaps in your Career!

There are more rules and more discussions to have but this is a great start. Let's keep an open mindand work to improve your future.

Should You Make A Career Decision Based Upon A Career Quiz?

Q. I'm about to graduate High School and I don't know what I want to be "when I grow up". Do you think that a career quiz might help me decide?

A. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! But maybe not for the reasons that you think. You see, as the great Quiz master, I've found one thing to be true: A career quiz, or any quiz for that matter, is always biased towards the thoughts and belief's of the person who wrote it.

Usually a career quiz is written for entertainment purposes only. Now, if you are calling it a career quiz, but you really mean some sort of standardized occupational guidance test like professional career counselors and the military use, then those are typically valid assessments of your career capabilities.

However, since you are asking the question here, and I am definitely not a career counselor, then I'm going to assume that you are talking about your run-of-the-mill career quiz like the type that you find in typical magazines and on a variety of general audience web sites.

So, the reason that I said "Yes, yes, a thousand times yes" is because anything that gets someone thinking about career options is a good thing. A well-written career quiz has the effect of causing you to brainstorm over your career options. What you want to be "when you grow up" may be a moving target for you. Most people evolve as they mature and their goals change. What sounds like a good idea now may be far away from what you will eventually become. However, as I said, a career quiz gets you thinking and that's a start!

When looking for a career quiz take a good look at the type of questions that are being asked. Remember what I said about the author's bias earlier? You want to find a career quiz that asks "horizontal" questions rather than "vertical" ones. For example, a horizontal question might be: "Do you enjoy working against deadlines?", while I vertical question might be "do you prefer the precision of hand tools versus the speed of power tools?".

Horizontal career quiz questions are designed to explore general career likes and dislikes while "vertical" questions tends to try and shoehorn you into a particular career path. Now don't get me wrong, there is a place for a vertical career quiz. For example, if you are thinking about a career in woodworking, and you are trying to decide if you want to be a cabinet maker or a house framer, a vertical career quiz is exactly what you need.

The important thing to remember is to never make a career decision based solely upon the results of some career quiz that you happen to come across. If the quiz gets you to thinking that you might enjoy some particular career, then research that option more fully. A career quiz is simply another tool to help you navigate the pathways of life. Good luck!

Don't Lose Your Best Employees

This can't possibly be intentional. Management hires what they expect will be an appropriate addition to the team. They train this employee, teaching not only the requirements of the job as a function, but also the inner workings of the organization itself. They expose the employee to customers, vendors, and co-workers, maybe even key financial relationships. The employee gains tremendous knowledge specific to the company and how it works, with all the ups and downs of the organization. Years and years, and thousands upon thousands of dollars go by.

One day the employee says to himself or herself, "I've got to get out of here I'm not growing. My ideas are not being considered. I haven't had a performance review in ages. I'm not recognized or appreciated. I'm not being paid what I know I'm worth. There's no consideration given to the dramatic amount of money I'm saving for the company." And thus the company loses another top performer. Only the mediocre employees stick around. What a waste of money and time! Does this sound familiar?

The problem can be fixed from the top. (It probably also started there.) Many organizational managers have found themselves in leadership roles quite by accident. They were top performers on a technical level themselves, and either became supervisors by promotion or by ownership. This does not make them inherently good and productive managers of people. Put corrective action in place!

Make sure the organization has a solid set of job descriptions for all roles in the company, including the top positions. Make sure that performance appraisals are performed on a regular scheduled basis, not just when someone begs for a raise. Document performance carefully, both positive and negative. Be creative, fair, and ethical with rewards and punishment. Not all rewards cost money! People measure success in a variety of ways: growth, environment, and satisfaction. Do you know what motivates your people? Indeed, they may measure success in entirely different ways than expected. Be systematic and organized in communicating with your people. Know the parameters of fair compensation in the marketplace.

Managers need to take a hard look at themselves and their company processes when hoping to retain the best people. The "human assets" are probably one of the most expensive budget items in the operation of the business. Don't invest in them, only to lose that investment through lack of management disciplines. Don't grow 'em, only to throw'em, away.

Career Goals

If you are a college student and planning to have a great career, you will need to develop tangible career goals, which will enable you to reach your coveted career position. But if someone asks you about your career goals, do you have a concrete answer for that tricky question? Most of us have a tough time answering this dicey question. When you have a right career goal and a clear cut action plan to achieve those goals, you re probably on your way to a career success.

How easy is to develop a career goal? With right attitude and mind, anyone can create a career goal for future success in life. Choosing your preferred career is a dynamic decision, which is a continuously ongoing process, demanding your dedication and attention. You may also need to apply your knowledge of self, academic interest, professional acumen, financial obligations and physical requirements. It also demands your power to apply some tricky logistical techniques and work ethics to reach some sort of career goals.

The three steps in creating a career goal are:

1. Test, examine and identify all those personal values before arriving at a career goal. Check out for any loopholes and deficiencies in your understanding of the real situation. Be specific to define any problems or potential obstacles to reach the goal. Never deceive yourself by deducing wrong or improper conclusions.

2. Assign, identify, pool and use correct information; wrong information may create havoc at a later date. Thus you may need to accumulate only relevant and rational data and information while choosing your career goals.

3. Develop, understand and use an effective action strategy for transforming all those information in to action. This step is almost like the heart of your career goal setting, as you will consider all practical aspects of career goal setting.

Once you have prepared these guidelines, you will plunge into creating a concrete action plan to achieve your goals. The following guidelines will help you to create a foolproof action plan:

1. State the problem and its objectives in clear terms
2. Define your goal in your own words.
3. Prepare a temporary action plan containing every essential step
4. Get ready with several alternatives and choices
5. Now develop a solid final action plan to achieve your career goals. Be prepared to change the plan midway to suit to any changing conditions.
6. Set up mid term appraisal studies to check any deviations
7. Replace old decisions with new, more practical decisions.

When you re through the college, create excellent resume and credential reports to provide them to your future employers. If you re not interested in a job and if you want to set up your own business, get ready for the action as a final plunge to chase that elusive career goal.

Spring Career Fairs

Quick Tips For Making The Most Of The Spring Career Fairs

Spring is in the air - or it was in the air until today if you are on the east coast - and it is time for career fairs to sprout up everywhere. Whether your interest is a college career fair, diversity career fair or an industry specialty career fair, there is much to choose from. New college grads, new alumni and not-so-new alumni are out looking to see what is available for them in this early career fair season. A lot - if job seekers play their cards right.

The career fair is an awesome place to explore career options and make new potential career connections. Despite the target rich concentration of opportunities, many job seekers fail to connect with recruiters in a meaningful way. Is it possible they might be overwhelmed and feel lost in a sea of suits?

To make your trip to the career fair work - you must have a strategy. You must develop a game plan for spanning the terrain, sizing up your target and moving in to make that new career connection. Unfortunately, we can always tell the candidates who are unprepared and knew little more than the fact that they were going to a career fair. They are usually the folks head down in programs or room layout and wandering aimlessly up and down the aisles, stopping to talk only to those who are free, just because they are free and not because the company was a target employer of theirs.

Some quick career fair do's:

1. Do identify a target number of companies that you want to connect with for a few minutes each Have an actual list. Search the map before you enter the employer space and get your bearings.

2. Do have your 30 second spot or introduction that go along with your error free resume.

3. Do prepare questions you specifically want to ask, based on prior research. Begin your sentences with a fact you know about the organization you are trying to engage eg. I saw that you are opening a new division in xyz, are there any opportunities in the abc division?

4. Do have a 30 second spot or statement to ask for the follow-up if you are really interested. Most people miss this piece! Eg. I would really like to talk more in depth with you about xyz, how may I follow-up with you? If you collect a business card, you have 48 hours to follow-up.

Some quick career fair don'ts:

1. Do not job search in packs. Ditch your friend, your ride, your helicopter parent or whoever is accompanying you and arrange a time to meet.

2. Do not pick up "career fair goodies" without first having a conversation with the recruiters. Do not do the side swipe for that really cool pen while the recruiter is speaking with someone else.

3. Do not stand in lines more than 2 people deep at a career fair. Time is important, especially if you are on your lunch hour like a lot of other job seekers there. Make the rounds and comeback if the company is really on your list.

4. Do not ask the same questions the person before you did if you heard all the answers. Build on what you heard and advance the conversation with the recruiter.

5. Do not hover, look lost or confused while at a career fair. Work the room with purpose. If you begin to feel lost or overwhelmed, exit the room and gather yourself.

No question that career fairs can be overwhelming. Preparation is truly the key to career fair success. Make the best of the season.

Is Accreditation Really A Big Deal?

Students considering colleges, career schools and online degree programs are often confused by the concept and meaning of accreditation. And, they frequently confuse it with state licensure, which is very different.

To be accredited, a school, traditional college, or online college has to meet fairly rigorous standards of quality. State licensure, on the other hand, generally requires an institution to meet only the most minimal standards. Thus, a warning flag should be raised when a college emphasizes licensure in lieu of regional accreditation.

Students should be aware that a number of higher education institutions, particularly those engaged in offering online degrees and distance education programs, report that they are accredited by organizations which are not approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Whether these organizations are staffed by scam artists or well meaning educators, the so-called accreditation they offer is, practically speaking, entirely worthless in the eyes of most employers and accredited colleges.

For example, in their help wanted announcements, schools, colleges, and universities virtually always require that applicants hold degrees from institutions accredited by U.S. Department of Education recognized agencies.

Accredited colleges and universities will almost never accept transfer credit for courses completed at unaccredited colleges or colleges. And, they do not differentiate between colleges with no accreditation at all and those with so-called accreditation offered by unrecognized agencies.

Of course, students who want a degree only for personal satisfaction may initially not think accreditation is of much importance. But, if they reconsider, even those students should want to earn a degree that is viewed as a valuable credential; a degree that demonstrates that they have completed a rigorous academic program; a degree from a college or university that has proven that it meets the highest educational standards. That is why students should always find out which agency accredits a college they are considering, and go to the U.S. Department of Education website to be sure that the agency is government recognized.

Nobody can promise that, just because it's accredited, you'll be happy at an individual college or university. But accreditation does virtually guarantee you the advantages of qualified instructors and a well conceived curriculum. And, it means that employers are likely to recognize your degree as a meaningful credential which demonstrates motivation and expertise.

Dream Job Map

A Dream Job Map will help you discover what you want in your work life.

Follow the steps below and create your own map. It is a very useful tool and a lot of fun too !

How much time you spend on your map is up to you. Don t try to do it when you are feeling rushed or hassled. Set aside a quiet evening or a weekend afternoon.

- Get a very large piece of paper, glue and scissor

- Gather magazines, catalog's and newspapers

- Look for ideas, images, concepts, activities, experiences and words that speak to you or bring out good feelings. It could be a photo of an environment you would like to work in (art gallery, university, outdoors, an office with a large desk and comfortable leather chair) or an idea (working with children, being a writer) or an experience (making an audience laugh, organizing a filing system). Be creative !

- Make sure you put the Yes, but how? voices to one side while you answer these questions. Do not worry about whether they are realistic or not. Don t censor yourself with limitations. I know a lady who lives in Italy and she works as a flight attendant for a British airline company. She happily commutes from Rome to Heathrow for work !

- Cut out these photos / ideas / concepts which appeal to you

- Place and paste them on the paper in the way that you like

Now that you have created your unique Dream Job Map, answer the following questions (This might take a few weeks to complete):

- What have you learnt about yourself from looking at your Dream Job Map ?

- Do you see any work themes / patterns ?

- What career ideas can you come up with ? Write down 5 ideas. If you can t think of any, ask your family and friends to come up with some suggestions.

- Turn these ideas into job opportunities. Ask for help if you need it. Search on internet.

- How do you feel about these jobs ? Do they inspire you ?

- Which one gives you the most energy / motivation / enthusiasm ? Which one aligns mostly with your work values ? Choose one.

- Include everything you know that supports this choice and everything that undermines it You re moving towards making this happen, so you need to start with a full and true assessment of where you are. Whatever the obstacles, you need to find a way to deal with them! Do you need to learn a new skill to close the gap between reality and your vision ? Do you need to attend classes, learn a foreign language ?

- Make an action plan which will take you from where you are now to where you want to be.

- Think about the people in your life who can help you reach this goal, like mentors and friends. Think about how they can help, and contact them.

- Take action and monitor your progress. Enjoy each step and reward yourself !

Stress Management Techniques

The Top 5 To Cultivate To Succeed At Work

What are your favorite stress management techniques?

The techniques described here take time to cultivate, but is well worth your effort. The ultimate objective being to develop a habit of these techniques - so that it becomes second nature to you.

As a career builder newbie, I urge you to start developing some of these stress management techniques in order to manage the stress you will experience as you climb the corporate ladder.

1. Greet People Warmly

Greeting people warmly especially in the morning is important to manage stress. You wonder why? Have you ever noticed how some people come in the office grumpy? It is almost as if, they have decided that they will be stressed out that day. When you greet someone warmly in the morning, it says you have decided that you will start a great day. Imagine starting a day on the low and watch it get worse!

2. Be Conscious Of Your Behavior

Being conscious of your behavior means to be conscious of how you feel and act. It is the trigger in your mind that says I am getting impatient with this discussion. And I am going to raise my voice. Once you are mindful of your actions you can choose to react in a more positive fashion. Now, you may ask how can I be conscious of my actions if I am in the middle of an argument with someone? Well, it takes practice. Just as we practice a certain sport prior to an important tournament.

3. Be Conscious Of Our Breath

Taking deep breaths and counting is a popular stress management technique. In this particular one, my variation is to be conscious of my breath. Whenever I feel stressed, I excuse myself if I am in the company of others and walk away. While walking away to the washroom for example, I concentrate on my breath touching the tip of my upper lip. And I consciously slow my breath down while concentrating on it. It takes the negative thoughts out of my mind.

4. Reviewing The Positive

Create a habit of reviewing the positive that has happened throughout the day. The idea is to cultivate the habit of looking at the positive. Instead of crashing in front of the television when you reach home, spend five to ten minutes reviewing what nice things others have done for you. The kind deed others have done that made your day turn out great. I practice this while being stuck in traffic. It kills two birds with one stone, it allows me to review the positive and takes my mind off the traffic situation at the same time.

5. Letting Go The Negative

Let s face it - we are but mere mortals. We will make mistakes while trying to cultivate these habits to manage stress. In reviewing the positives, we should also be conscious of the negative that we have done. Maybe we did not realize it earlier in the day. It could be something nasty we have said to someone. Realize this and cleanse yourself by flushing away the misdirected actions. Do this by forgiving yourself and remind yourself that you will not do it again.

Admittedly, these 5 stress management techniques take time to cultivate. Make a decision to start today and watch your stress greatly reduced as time goes by.

Facing Interview

Job interview questions more or less follow a set pattern. You can get to know them from leading career sites or professional career guide agencies. It s always better to have answers to common questions prepared beforehand, so that you can convincingly drive home the points in the interview board. To maintain the right stresses and pauses, it is always advisable to rehearse some mock interviews before some close friend who can point out the lapses, if any, for appropriate corrective action.

In an interview board, it s always important to present facts and stay away from fiction. If there s something that you do not know, tell that to the board. No body expects you to know everything. If you are working somewhere and planning a change, tell the reason why you are contemplating the change honestly to the board if you are asked about it. Even if it is for a mundane reason like disliking the boss, come out honestly. If you have been fired from the previous job, tell them that. Placing straight things straight generally do not harm; rather, they earn you appreciation.

When replying to the questions, you must remember to show due courtesies to the interview board. Sounding loud, aggressive or garrulous is not well taken. Do not interrupt the person asking the question midway; wait for him to complete his question and then give your answer.

Do not forget to be cool and bring out the best of positive attitude in you to clinch the interview.

Career Placement Test

Career Placement Test your strengths and weaknesses

Career placement test is taken by persons who wanted to know what careers suits them. It is also a way to determine if a person needs help in deciding what course or career he or she will take up upon finishing his or her current status. Career placement test is applicable to high school students and degree holder persons.

Career placement test is particularly helpful if a person has difficulty in choosing on what path to select after graduating from high school or college. Yes, it may be helpful but not all can benefit from career placement test. This is so because on some the result of a career placement test is a far cry from what they really want to be.

For this, I can say that career placement test is there only to give you a hint or to guide you but not to influence your decisions. The important thing that you should do is to contemplate by yourself and think what you really like to be in the future.

Assess yourself by carefully studying your strengths and weaknesses. In reference to the results of your assessment, create options on what career are you going to take. Then choose which the best possible course is for you that will of course benefit you in the future. Perhaps, taking up a career placement test will help you come up with a good solution.

But don't depend on it. It is in your hands to realize what the best step that you should follow is. You can also ask your family, relatives and friends about this concern. You can ask about their opinion. However, don't let them influence you greatly because it is not them who will suffer if your decision comes out to be a disaster for you.

If you wanted to have a career guide you can opt to get a career placement exam. There are a lot of career placement test that is available in the Internet for free. You just have to select a credible career placement website and wait for the results. But don't forget to bear in your mind that you have the last say on the topic of your career.

Career Aptitude Tests

  • Parenting,
  • Volunteering,
  • Personal growth (think hobbies and household management), or
  • Part time jobs.

Resume Writing

Figuring out what you've actually accomplished in your career is one of the most difficult parts of writing your resume. Many people believe they haven't done much of anything; just every day tasks that don t amount to anything.

Think again.

I am willing to say virtually everyone can think of at least one achievement per position they've held. Not you? Don t be so quick to judge. You just have to know where to look and how to dig deep to find the information.

The right place to look

If you've been at a particular position for more than a year, most likely you have had a performance review. What good does that do? It reviews the year for you. It's difficult to remember what you did and what you accomplished and the written review is a great way to bring it all back.

Another way is to take a close look at your department. Does it run more efficiently since you've been employed there? Did you develop a key to improve intra-office communication? Are backorders reduced by 80% because of a process you created?

Note to self: To make this process easier for future jobs, keep a journal of your activities and achievements so that it can be referred to at any time.

What if you were never there

Just sit back and close your eyes and run through a typical day at work. How has it changed since you started? Has it gotten better? Of course! You made it better. Think about who you come in contact with and how you impact their productiveness and efficiency. You'll be surprised by how much impact you have on your co-workers and even your bosses.

When you start to even think about job hunting, be aware of the day-to-day tasks that occur. Some seem minute; others not so much. How do you contribute to the meetings you re involved with on a weekly or monthly basis? All these little responsibilities and achievements can add up to something great.

Remember - think highly of yourself

Whatever you do, do not ever say, I don't/didn't make a difference, in the process of writing your resume. Nonsense. With that mentality, your resume isn't going to include anything noteworthy for employers. If you don t think you amount to anything, why in the world would someone want to hire you? Have confidence in yourself and it ll shine through to your resume.

Career in Arts

Nowadays, there are a number of professions that are available for those who have a passion for art. However, apart from the fact that there are quite a number of careers in art to choose from, some of these professions pay really well, which makes them very attractive to those who want to have a career in art. As a result, there are now a large number of art schools that help people who want a career in art get the skills they need to be able to practice a profession in art design, direction, and other professions. Unfortunately, the wide selection of art schools to choose from in the market can make the search for an art school very difficult. This is because canvassing for an art school, especially if it is done online, requires that a person go through thousands of art school web sites to get the information that they need to be able to compare schools.

Some helpful web sites

The good news is that there are a number of web sites that you can go to, which can help you jump start your search for an art school by providing the information that you need to guide you in your search for the right art school for you. One good example of such a web site is www.allartschools.com, which is a web site that provides very important information on art schools and their programs. Just like this web site, the other web sites that are meant to help people in the search for an art school also provide very important information, which they usually present through a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.

These pages are where the most commonly asked questions on art schools are answered, with the aim of arming those looking for an art school with the necessary guidance they need. Some of the most common issues that are addressed in these FAQ pages include distinguishing between bachelor and associate, distinguishing between different specializations, and the career options that are available to art school graduates.

Given that there is a wide selection of art schools to choose from in the market, people looking for the right art school for them may find it a little overwhelming. Fortunately, there are some web sites that they can go to, which can provide them with guidance on how to conduct their search and some very important information that can make the search for an art school a little bit easier and less overwhelming.

Turning Your Hobby Into Your Career

How many of you people are bored of your current career? Is the grind of working nine to five with the same people day in day out getting you down? Have you had enough of that long commute to the office and all of those traffic jams? If you have answered yes to any of these three questions it may well be the time to think of an alternative career. This is what I and many other people have done, I have managed to turn one of my hobbies into a career. In this article I will of course explain more.

A couple of years ago I was on the way to work when for no apparent reason I became stuck in what I call non moving traffic. I phoned the office where I worked to let them know that I was likely to arrive slightly late. Do not worry commented my boss, you can make up the hours before you leave. This angered me some what, it was not my fault that I was in all of this traffic, it was just a one off. The boss was also aware that I held training for an under eights football team on this particular night and that it was not really possible for me to work later, unless of course I was to organize somebody else to run the training session.
